Daimler & Volvo Sign SDV Joint Venture Deal for Truck OS Future

Joint venture aimed at transforming the commercial vehicle industry through a new software-defined vehicle platform and establishing a new industry standard. 

Coretura is based in Gothenburg, Sweden, and began operations in the beginning of June 2025. 

Johan Lundén, coming from Volvo Group, has been appointed as CEO of Coretura. 

Coretura is set to grow stepwise aiming to launch its first products in vehicles by the end of the decade.

Leinfelden-Echterdingen, Germany / Gothenburg, Sweden – Daimler Truck and Volvo Group, two of the leaders in the commercial vehicle industry, announce the launch of Coretura AB, their joint venture aimed at transforming the commercial vehicle industry through a new software-defined vehicle platform and establishing a new industry standard. Coretura will enable Daimler Truck and Volvo Group and other future customers to provide differentiating stand-alone digital vehicle applications for their products. 

Following the binding joint venture agreements signed on October 28, 2024, Daimler Truck and Volvo Group have obtained all required regulatory approvals and have now launched the new company Coretura. Following the joint venture transaction, Coretura, based in Gothenburg, Sweden, began operations in the beginning of June 2025.

Coretura will be led by a four-member Executive Management team consisting of two members from each of the shareholders. Johan Lundén has been appointed as CEO coming from Volvo Group where he previously held responsibility for Strategic Product Planning, Project and Innovation management. 

Unlocking the digital future of commercial vehicles

As commercial vehicles are becoming more digital, the mission of Coretura is to build the non-differentiating core, a standardized and open software-defined vehicle platform and dedicated commercial vehicle operating system. 

Coretura’s activities also include the specification and procurement of centralized high-performance control units at scale dedicated for commercial vehicles and capable of handling large amounts of data. This will enable the decoupling of software and hardware development cycles, allowing end customers to purchase and update digital applications wirelessly ‘over the air,’ enhancing safety, efficiency and customer experience.

Starting with around 50 employees, Coretura is set to grow stepwise. This allows the shareholders to pool resources and invest in accordance with technical progress and achievement of milestones. Coretura thereby follows a collaborative co-development approach with its customers, aiming to launch its first products in vehicles by the end of the decade. 

Daimler Truck and Volvo Group will remain competitors and continue to differentiate their range of product and services offerings, including their respective digital solutions.

Daimler Truck and Volvo Group sign binding agreement for joint venture to develop software-defined vehicle platform

Daimler Truck and Volvo Group have signed a binding agreement to establish a new 50/50 joint venture to develop a software-defined vehicle platform for heavy duty vehicles and drive the industry transformation.

The new company aims to set an industry standard with headquarters in Gothenburg, Sweden.

The common goal of the partners is to develop a truck operating system and to offer the joint venture's brand- and versatile application-agnostic products to other commercial vehicle OEMs.

Daimler Truck and Volvo Group will remain competitors in all other business areas and will continue to focus on an independent product and service offering, including the respective differentiating digital customer offerings. 

Gothenburg, Sweden/Leinfelden-Echterdingen, Germany - As announced in May this year, Daimler Truck and Volvo Group intend to create a joint venture to develop a common software-defined vehicle platform and dedicated truck operating system, providing the basis for future software-defined commercial vehicles. The two leading companies in the commercial vehicle industry have now signed a binding agreement to establish the joint venture and are working towards setting up the company that will be headquartered in Gothenburg, Sweden. The software-defined vehicle platform will enable Daimler Truck and Volvo Group and potential other future customers of the joint venture to provide stand-alone digital vehicle functions for their products.

The joint venture’s activities will include the specification and procurement of centralized high-performance control units dedicated for commercial vehicles and capable of handling large amounts of data. The new company will develop an operating system and tools which vehicle manufacturers can use as a basis to develop their own differentiating digital vehicle features. This will decouple software and hardware development cycles in the future and enable customers to purchase and update digital applications wirelessly ‘over the air’, ultimately enhancing customer efficiency and experience. 

Daimler Truck and Volvo Group will remain competitors and continue to differentiate their complete product and services offerings, including their respective digital solutions.

The transaction for the joint venture is expected to be completed in the first half of 2025, subject to obtaining all required regulatory approvals.

Daimler Truck and Volvo Group share the ambition to lead transformation to software-defined heavy-duty commercial vehicles to enhance customer efficiency and experience.

Both companies intend to create a joint venture to become the leading developer of a software-defined heavy-duty vehicle platform, including software and hardware, providing the basis for differentiating digital vehicle features.

The new company is intended to be a 50/50 joint venture to be headquartered in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Gothenburg, Sweden / Leinfelden-Echterdingen, Germany – As two leading companies in the commercial vehicle industry, Daimler Truck and Volvo Group share the ambition to lead the digital transformation to software-defined heavy-duty commercial vehicles. To amplify their efforts, both companies have reached a preliminary agreement to establish a joint venture to develop a common software-defined vehicle platform and dedicated truck operating system, providing the basis for future software-defined commercial vehicles. The intention is to make the new joint venture a leading developer of standardized hardware and software. This technical basis will then enable Daimler Truck and Volvo Group and potentially other partners to provide differentiating digital vehicle features for its products ultimately enhancing customer efficiency and experience. 

Daimler Truck and Volvo Group intend to be 50/50 partners in the joint venture, which will operate as an independent entity, with Daimler Truck and Volvo Group continuing to be competitors in all other areas of business. In the context of the already heavy-investments into the transformation towards CO2-neutral drive technologies, cooperation on digital technology development has become even more vital to best meet development objectives and customer expectations within a feasible timeframe.

The joint venture is set to be headquartered in Gothenburg, Sweden, incorporating existing assets and resources of both companies into the new organization. The goal of both shareholders is to set the industry standard for a truck operating system and offer its products to other OEMs as well. To that end the joint venture will provide a common developer platform as a service, on top of which its customers can build differentiating software layers. 

Daimler Truck and Volvo Group therefore will remain fierce competitors and continue to differentiate their complete product and services offerings, including their respective digital solutions. Both companies will provide their own end-user applications on top of the platform to offer differentiating digital vehicle features to their respective customers. 

The now signed preliminary agreement is non-binding. A final agreement is expected within this year, with the goal to close the final transaction in Q1 2025, subject to necessary examination and approvals by the respective authorities.
